Entrance into the Temple of the Holy Theotokos Protevangelium of James (@150) November 21 Saints Joachim and Anne present their three year old daughter, the Virgin Mary, to High Priest St. Zacharias for service in the Jewish Temple. The haloes represent the the Grace of Christ radiating from His Saints under a kivorion which represents the ‘sky’ or Kingdom of Heaven which is positioned over the place where Christ will be offered and brought forth: in this case Mary in the future. The red drapes set the scene inside the Temple. A group of young women with lighted candles (symbolic of honoring her holiness and holy deed) have accompanied Mary to the Temple for her nine years of service. The icon shows an older, future Mary on the steps of the Holy of Holies receiving a spiritual loaf of Holy Bread from an angel.
