Entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday, Flowery/Willow Sunday)
Sunday before Easter/Pascha
John 12:12-15
The Lord Jesus in blue cloak (divinity) over red undergarment (humanity) rides a colt to Jerusalem and is followed by disciples and greeted by crowds showing ‘Hosanna’ (save now). Cloaks and palm branches are thrown before his path. The colt is an ‘unclean’ animal so the use of it alludes to Christ offering salvation to Jews and gentiles.
A youth cutting palm branches in the central tree symbolizes catechumens rising to higher knowledge of the Faith.
Christ blesses with the right hand and holds a scroll symbolizing the Old Testament prophecies in the left.
