Readings this week from the Gospel of Mark<\/p>\n
Mark 5:Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the [a<\/a>]<\/sup>Gadarenes. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>who had his<\/i> dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind [b<\/a>]<\/sup>him, not even with chains, <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.<\/span><\/p>\n 6\u00a0<\/sup>When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>And he cried out with a loud voice and said, \u201cWhat have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore[c<\/a>]<\/sup> You by God that You do not torment me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 8\u00a0<\/sup>For He said to him, \u201cCome out of the man, unclean spirit!\u201d<\/span> <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>Then He asked him, \u201cWhat is<\/i> your name?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n And he answered, saying, \u201cMy name is<\/i> Legion; for we are many.\u201d <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n 11\u00a0<\/sup>Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>So all the demons begged Him, saying, \u201cSend us to the swine, that we may enter them.\u201d <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>And [d<\/a>]<\/sup>at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n 14\u00a0<\/sup>So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it<\/i> in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been<\/i> demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. <\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been<\/i> demon-possessed, and about the swine. <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.<\/span><\/p>\n 18\u00a0<\/sup>And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, \u201cGo home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.\u201d<\/span> <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>And he departed and began to proclaim in [e<\/a>]<\/sup>Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O Lord, our God, in Thy goodness and love for men forgive me all the sins I have committed today in word, deed or thought. Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep. Send Thy Guardian Angel to guard and protect me from all evil. For Thou art the guardian of our souls and bodies, and to Thee we ascribe glory, to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Monday 25\u00a0<\/sup>Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him<\/i> in the crowd and touched His garment. <\/span> 28\u00a0<\/sup>For she said, \u201cIf only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 29\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her<\/i> body that she was healed of the [f<\/a>]<\/sup>affliction. <\/span> 30\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, \u201cWho touched My clothes?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n 31\u00a0<\/sup>But His disciples said to Him, \u201cYou see the multitude thronging You, and You say, \u2018Who touched Me?\u2019<\/span> \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 32\u00a0<\/sup>And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. <\/span> 33\u00a0<\/sup>But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. <\/span> 34\u00a0<\/sup>And He said to her, \u201cDaughter,<\/span> your faith has made you well.<\/span> Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O come, let us worship God our King. Tuesday<\/p>\n Background of the Gospel of Mark<\/p>\n The Gospel of Mark is probably the first Gospel written since Matthew and Luke contain about 93% of the material that is found in Mark. Also, when Matthew and Luke have different stories than Mark, they do not together list their stories in a different sequence than Mark.<\/p>\n The Gospel of Mark was originally an anonymous document since the focus was on Jesus Christ, not who was the exact author of the text. Nowhere in the Gospel of Mark is there a specific claim regarding who authored the book. However, there is an early tradition that associated John Mark as the author of the Gospel. Bishop Papias writing around 140? A.D. states that Mark interpreted the words of the apostle Peter accurately, but not in direct chronological sequence. Since John Mark probably wrote the Gospel, his association with Peter would tend to give historical credibility to the account since Peter was an eyewitness who knew Jesus while He was on this earth. Prayer:\u00a0 Soul of Christ, sanctify me, Body of Christ, save me Blood of Christ, inebriate me, Water from Christ’s side, wash me, Passion of Christ, strengthen me, O good Jesus, hear me, Within Thy wounds hide me, Suffer me not to be separated from Thee, From the malicious enemy defend me, In the hour of my death call me, And bid me come unto Thee, That I may praise Thee with Thy saints, and with Thy angels, Forever and ever, Amen.<\/p>\n Wednesday 36\u00a0<\/sup>As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, \u201cDo not be afraid; only<\/span> believe.\u201d<\/span> <\/span> 37\u00a0<\/sup>And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. <\/span> 38\u00a0<\/sup>Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw [g<\/a>]<\/sup>a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. <\/span> 39\u00a0<\/sup>When He came in, He said to them, \u201cWhy make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but<\/span> sleeping.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n 40\u00a0<\/sup>And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were<\/i> with Him, and entered where the child was lying. <\/span> 41\u00a0<\/sup>Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, \u201cTalitha, cumi,\u201d<\/span> which is translated, \u201cLittle girl, I say to you, arise.\u201d<\/span> <\/span> 42\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age.<\/i> And they were overcome with great amazement. <\/span> 43\u00a0<\/sup>But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something<\/i> should be given her to eat.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.\u00a0 Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Thursday 4\u00a0<\/sup>But Jesus said to them, \u201cA prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.\u201d<\/span> <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.<\/i> <\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n 7\u00a0<\/sup>And He called the twelve to Himself,<\/i> and began to send them out two by<\/i> two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. <\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff\u2014no bag, no bread, no copper in their<\/i> money belts\u2014 <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit,\u00a0 grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.<\/p>\n Friday 12\u00a0<\/sup>So they went out and preached that people<\/i> should repent. <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n 14\u00a0<\/sup>Now King Herod heard of Him,<\/i> for His name had become well known. And he said, \u201cJohn the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 15\u00a0<\/sup>Others said, \u201cIt is Elijah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n And others said, \u201cIt is [c<\/a>]<\/sup>the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 16\u00a0<\/sup>But when Herod heard, he said, \u201cThis is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!\u201d <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip\u2019s wife; for he had married her. <\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>Because John had said to Herod, \u201cIt is not lawful for you to have your brother\u2019s wife.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 With the Saints, give rest, O Christ, to the souls of Thy servants, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no sighing, but life everlasting. <\/p>\n Saturday<\/p>\n Mark 6:19\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore Herodias [d<\/a>]<\/sup>held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>for Herod feared John, knowing that he was<\/i> a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he [e<\/a>]<\/sup>did many things, and heard him gladly.<\/span><\/p>\n 21\u00a0<\/sup>Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men<\/i> of Galilee. <\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>And when Herodias\u2019 daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, \u201cAsk me whatever you want, and I will give it<\/i> to you.\u201d <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>He also swore to her, \u201cWhatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 24\u00a0<\/sup>So she went out and said to her mother, \u201cWhat shall I ask?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n And she said, \u201cThe head of John the Baptist!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 25\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, \u201cI want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 26\u00a0<\/sup>And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet,<\/i> because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her. <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison, <\/span> 28\u00a0<\/sup>brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. <\/span> 29\u00a0<\/sup>When his disciples heard of it,<\/i> they came and took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 Lord, I have cried to Thee, hearken unto me. Hearken unto me, O Lord. Lord, I have cried to Thee, hearken unto me.\u00a0 Attend to the voice of my prayer, when I cry unto Thee. Hearken unto me, O Lord. \nMark 5:Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. <\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>and begged Him earnestly, saying, \u201cMy little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.\u201d <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>So Jesus<\/i> went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt is uncertain when the Gospel of Mark was written. It most likely was written sometime between 45 to 70 A.D. Most scholars today would date it around 65-70 A.D.<\/p>\n
\nMark 5:\u00a0While He was still speaking, some<\/i> came from the ruler of the synagogue\u2019s house<\/i> who said, \u201cYour daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMark 6:Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him<\/i> were astonished, saying, \u201cWhere did<\/i> this Man get<\/i> these things? And what wisdom is<\/i> this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?\u201d So they were offended at Him.<\/span><\/p>\n
