MATTHEW 5 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2\u00a0<\/sup>Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBlessed are<\/i> the poor in spirit,
\nFor theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
\n4\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed are<\/i> those who mourn,
\nFor they shall be comforted.
\n5\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed are<\/i> the meek,
\nFor they shall inherit the earth.
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed are<\/i> those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
\nFor they shall be filled.
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed are<\/i> the merciful,
\nFor they shall obtain mercy.
\n8\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed are<\/i> the pure in heart,
\nFor they shall see God.
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed are<\/i> the peacemakers,
\nFor they shall be called sons of God.
\n10\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed are<\/i> those who are persecuted for righteousness\u2019 sake,
\nFor theirs is the kingdom of heaven.<\/p>\n

Whoever will take the trouble to examine with a pious and sober spirit, will find in this sermon a perfect code of the Christian life as far as relates to the conduct of daily life. Accordingly the Lord concludes it with the words, Every man who heareth these words of mine and doeth them, I will liken him to a wise man, ect…\u00a0The chief good is the only motive of philosophical enquiry; but whatever confers blessedness, that is the chief good; therefore He begins, Blessed are the poor in spirit.<\/p>\n
