Luke 18:18\u00a0<\/sup>Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, \u201cGood Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 19\u00a0<\/sup>So Jesus said to him, \u201cWhy do you call Me good? No one is<\/i> good but One, that is,<\/i> God.<\/span> <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>You know the commandments: \u2018Do not commit adultery,\u2019 \u2018Do not murder,\u2019 \u2018Do not steal,\u2019 \u2018Do not bear false witness,\u2019 \u2018Honor your father and your mother.\u2019 \u201d<\/span>[a<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n 21\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cAll these things I have kept from my youth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 22\u00a0<\/sup>So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, \u201cYou still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n 23\u00a0<\/sup>But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.<\/span><\/p>\n 24\u00a0<\/sup>And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, \u201cHow hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!<\/span> <\/span> 25\u00a0<\/sup>For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n 26\u00a0<\/sup>And those who heard it said, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 27\u00a0<\/sup>But He said, \u201cThe things which are impossible with men are possible with God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n OSB Commentary:\u00a0 Formal observance of commandments does not make one righteous before God. This man had an earnest desire for eternal life and sensed that he still lacked something; thus, he continues to press Jesus for the answer. 19: 21 To be perfect, one must willingly sacrifice all and follow Christ. Nothing is gained unless this sacrifice is given freely. The specifics of how one follows Christ will be different for each person. Because wealth had such a grip on this rich man, his only hope was to sell and give away all his possessions. St. John Chrysostom tells us that giving away possessions is the least of Christ\u2019s instructions here; following Him in all things is a far greater and more difficult calling.<\/p>\n Monday\u00a0 .. this week there are more excerpts from key passages in the Gospels<\/p>\n Sign of the Last Days in Mark<\/p>\n 28\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cNow learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 29\u00a0<\/sup>So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near\u2014at the doors! 30\u00a0<\/sup>Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 31\u00a0<\/sup>Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.<\/p>\n 32\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33\u00a0<\/sup>Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. 34\u00a0<\/sup>It is<\/em> like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. 35\u00a0<\/sup>Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming\u2014in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning\u2014 36\u00a0<\/sup>lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. 37\u00a0<\/sup>And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!\u201d<\/p>\n Tuesday<\/p>\n Mark 16<\/p>\n 14\u00a0<\/sup>Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15\u00a0<\/sup>And He said to them, \u201cGo into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16\u00a0<\/sup>He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17\u00a0<\/sup>And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18\u00a0<\/sup>they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.\u201d<\/p>\n 19\u00a0<\/sup>So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20\u00a0<\/sup>And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them<\/em> and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.<\/p>\n Wednesday<\/p>\n Luke<\/p>\n 46\u00a0<\/sup>And Mary said:<\/p>\n \u201cMy soul magnifies the Lord, Wednesday<\/p>\n 36\u00a0<\/sup>Then He spoke a parable to them: \u201cNo one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken<\/em> out of the new does not match the old. 37\u00a0<\/sup>And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38\u00a0<\/sup>But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39\u00a0<\/sup>And no one, having drunk old wine,<\/em> immediately desires new; for he says, \u2018The old is better.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Luke 6<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cBut woe to you who are rich, 27\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28\u00a0<\/sup>bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29\u00a0<\/sup>To him who strikes you on the one<\/em> cheek, offer the other also. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.<\/p>\n Thursday<\/p>\n Luke 6:<\/p>\n 37\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cJudge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38\u00a0<\/sup>Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.\u201d<\/p>\n 39\u00a0<\/sup>And He spoke a parable to them: \u201cCan the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40\u00a0<\/sup>A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41\u00a0<\/sup>And why do you look at the speck in your brother\u2019s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42\u00a0<\/sup>Or how can you say to your brother, \u2018Brother, let me remove the speck that is<\/em> in your eye,\u2019 when you yourself do not see the plank that is<\/em> in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n 43\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cFor a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44\u00a0<\/sup>For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men<\/em> do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45\u00a0<\/sup>A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.<\/p>\n Friday<\/p>\n 46\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut why do you call Me \u2018Lord, Lord,\u2019 and not do the things which I say? 47\u00a0<\/sup>Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48\u00a0<\/sup>He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49\u00a0<\/sup>But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.\u201d<\/p>\n Luke 7<\/strong><\/p>\n 6\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, \u201cLord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8\u00a0<\/sup>For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, \u2018Go,\u2019 and he goes; and to another, \u2018Come,\u2019 and he comes; and to my servant, \u2018Do this,\u2019 and he does it.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n 9\u00a0<\/sup>When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, \u201cI say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!\u201d 10\u00a0<\/sup>And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick.<\/p>\n Luke 8<\/strong><\/p>\n 16\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cNo one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it<\/em> under a bed, but sets it<\/em> on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light. 17\u00a0<\/sup>For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything<\/em> hidden that will not be known and come to light. 18\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more<\/em> will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.\u201d<\/p>\n Saturday<\/p>\n Luke 9<\/strong><\/p>\n 23\u00a0<\/sup>Then He said to them<\/em> all, \u201cIf anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24\u00a0<\/sup>For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25\u00a0<\/sup>For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26\u00a0<\/sup>For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own<\/em> glory, and in His<\/em> Father\u2019s, and of the holy angels. 27\u00a0<\/sup>But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/p>\n 46\u00a0<\/sup>Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. 47\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him, 48\u00a0<\/sup>and said to them, \u201cWhoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me.
