\n**Most of this week will be the reading of he 13th Chapter of Daniel, the story of Suzanna<\/p>\n
13\u00a0<\/span>There was a man living in Babylon whose name was Jo\u2032akim. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>And he took a wife named Susanna, the daughter of Hilki\u2032ah, a very beautiful woman and one who feared the Lord. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>Her parents were righteous, and had taught their daughter according to the law of Moses. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>Jo\u2032akim was very rich, and had a spacious garden adjoining his house; and the Jews used to come to him because he was the most honored of them all.<\/span><\/p>\n 5\u00a0<\/sup>In that year two elders from the people were appointed as judges. Concerning them the Lord had said: \u201cIniquity came forth from Babylon, from elders who were judges, who were supposed to govern the people.\u201d <\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>These men were frequently at Jo\u2032akim\u2019s house, and all who had suits at law came to them.<\/span><\/p>\n 7\u00a0<\/sup>When the people departed at noon, Susanna would go into her husband\u2019s garden to walk. <\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>The two elders used to see her every day, going in and walking about, and they began to desire her. <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>And they perverted their minds and turned away their eyes from looking to Heaven or remembering righteous judgments. <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>Both were overwhelmed with passion for her, but they did not tell each other of their distress, <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>for they were ashamed to disclose their lustful desire to possess her. <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>And they watched eagerly, day after day, to see her.<\/span><\/p>\n 13\u00a0<\/sup>They said to each other, \u201cLet us go home, for it is mealtime.\u201d <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>And when they went out, they parted from each other. But turning back, they met again; and when each pressed the other for the reason, they confessed their lust. And then together they arranged for a time when they could find her alone.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O Gentle Light of the holy glory of the immortal, heavenly, holy, blessed Father, O Jesus Christ: Having come to the setting of the sun, having beheld the evening light, we praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: God. Meet it is for Thee at all times to be hymned with reverent voices, O Son of God, Giver of life. Wherefore, the world doth glorify Thee.<\/p>\n *Eastern Vesper Hymn<\/p>\n Monday<\/p>\n 15\u00a0<\/sup>Once, while they were watching for an opportune day, she went in as before with only two maids, and wished to bathe in the garden, for it was very hot. <\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>And no one was there except the two elders, who had hid themselves and were watching her. <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>She said to her maids, \u201cBring me oil and ointments, and shut the garden doors so that I may bathe.\u201d <\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>They did as she said, shut the garden doors, and went out by the side doors to bring what they had been commanded; and they did not see the elders, because they were hidden.<\/span><\/p>\n 19\u00a0<\/sup>When the maids had gone out, the two elders rose and ran to her, and said: <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cLook, the garden doors are shut, no one sees us, and we are in love with you; so give your consent, and lie with us. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>If you refuse, we will testify against you that a young man was with you, and this was why you sent your maids away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 22\u00a0<\/sup>Susanna sighed deeply, and said, \u201cI am hemmed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death for me; and if I do not, I shall not escape your hands. <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>I choose not to do it and to fall into your hands, rather than to sin in the sight of the Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 24\u00a0<\/sup>Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice, and the two elders shouted against her. <\/span> 25\u00a0<\/sup>And one of them ran and opened the garden doors. <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>When the household servants heard the shouting in the garden, they rushed in at the side door to see what had happened to her. <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>And when the elders told their tale, the servants were greatly ashamed, for nothing like this had ever been said about Susanna.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.<\/p>\n Tuesday<\/p>\n 28\u00a0<\/sup>The next day, when the people gathered at the house of her husband Jo\u2032akim, the two elders came, full of their wicked plot to have Susanna put to death. <\/span> 29\u00a0<\/sup>They said before the people, \u201cSend for Susanna, the daughter of Hilki\u2032ah, who is the wife of Jo\u2032akim.\u201d <\/span> 30\u00a0<\/sup>So they sent for her. And she came, with her parents, her children, and all her kindred.<\/span><\/p>\n 31\u00a0<\/sup>Now Susanna was a woman of great refinement, and beautiful in appearance. <\/span> 32\u00a0<\/sup>As she was veiled, the wicked men ordered her to be unveiled, that they might feast upon her beauty. <\/span> 33\u00a0<\/sup>But her family and friends and all who saw her wept.<\/span><\/p>\n 34\u00a0<\/sup>Then the two elders stood up in the midst of the people, and laid their hands upon her head. <\/span> 35\u00a0<\/sup>And she, weeping, looked up toward heaven, for her heart trusted in the Lord. <\/span> 36\u00a0<\/sup>The elders said, \u201cAs we were walking in the garden alone, this woman came in with two maids, shut the garden doors, and dismissed the maids. <\/span> 37\u00a0<\/sup>Then a young man, who had been hidden, came to her and lay with her. <\/span> 38\u00a0<\/sup>We were in a corner of the garden, and when we saw this wickedness we ran to them. <\/span> 39\u00a0<\/sup>We saw them embracing, but we could not hold the man, for he was too strong for us, and he opened the doors and dashed out. <\/span> 40\u00a0<\/sup>So we seized this woman and asked her who the young man was, but she would not tell us. These things we testify.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 41\u00a0<\/sup>The assembly believed them, because they were elders of the people and judges; and they condemned her to death.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. Wednesday<\/p>\n 42\u00a0<\/sup>Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice, and said, \u201cO eternal God, who dost discern what is secret, who art aware of all things before they come to be, <\/span> 43\u00a0<\/sup>thou knowest that these men have borne false witness against me. And now I am to die! Yet I have done none of the things that they have wickedly invented against me!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 44\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord heard her cry. <\/span> 45\u00a0<\/sup>And as she was being led away to be put to death, God aroused the holy spirit of a young lad named Daniel; <\/span> 46\u00a0<\/sup>and he cried with a loud voice, \u201cI am innocent of the blood of this woman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 47\u00a0<\/sup>All the people turned to him, and said, \u201cWhat is this that you have said?\u201d <\/span> 48\u00a0<\/sup>Taking his stand in the midst of them, he said, \u201cAre you such fools, you sons of Israel? Have you condemned a daughter of Israel without examination and without learning the facts? <\/span> 49\u00a0<\/sup>Return to the place of judgment. For these men have borne false witness against her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance. Grant victory over their enemies to Orthodox Christians, and protect Thy people with Thy Cross.<\/p>\n Thursday<\/p>\n 50\u00a0<\/sup>Then all the people returned in haste. And the elders said to him, \u201cCome, sit among us and inform us, for God has given you that right.\u201d <\/span> 51\u00a0<\/sup>And Daniel said to them, \u201cSeparate them far from each other, and I will examine them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 52\u00a0<\/sup>When they were separated from each other, he summoned one of them and said to him, \u201cYou old relic of wicked days, your sins have now come home, which you have committed in the past, <\/span> 53\u00a0<\/sup>pronouncing unjust judgments, condemning the innocent and letting the guilty go free, though the Lord said, \u2018Do not put to death an innocent and righteous person.\u2019 <\/span> 54\u00a0<\/sup>Now then, if you really saw her, tell me this: Under what tree did you see them being intimate with each other?\u201d He answered, \u201cUnder a mastic tree.\u201d[a<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span> 55\u00a0<\/sup>And Daniel said, \u201cVery well! You have lied against your own head, for the angel of God has received the sentence from God and will immediately cut[b<\/a>]<\/sup> you in two.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O my God relying on Thy infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Friday<\/p>\n 56\u00a0<\/sup>Then he put him aside, and commanded them to bring the other. And he said to him, \u201cYou offspring of Canaan and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you and lust has perverted your heart. <\/span> 57\u00a0<\/sup>This is how you both have been dealing with the daughters of Israel, and they were intimate with you through fear; but a daughter of Judah would not endure your wickedness. <\/span> 58\u00a0<\/sup>Now then, tell me: Under what tree did you catch them being intimate with each other?\u201d He answered, \u201cUnder an evergreen oak.\u201d[c<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span> 59\u00a0<\/sup>And Daniel said to him, \u201cVery well! You also have lied against your own head, for the angel of God is waiting with his sword to saw[d<\/a>]<\/sup> you in two, that he may destroy you both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 60\u00a0<\/sup>Then all the assembly shouted loudly and blessed God, who saves those who hope in him. <\/span> 61\u00a0<\/sup>And they rose against the two elders, for out of their own mouths Daniel had convicted them of bearing false witness; <\/span> 62\u00a0<\/sup>and they did to them as they had wickedly planned to do to their neighbor; acting in accordance with the law of Moses, they put them to death. Thus innocent blood was saved that day.<\/span><\/p>\n 63\u00a0<\/sup>And Hilki\u2032ah and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna, and so did Jo\u2032akim her husband and all her kindred, because nothing shameful was found in her. <\/span> 64\u00a0<\/sup>And from that day onward Daniel had a great reputation among the people.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O my God I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all-good and worthy of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Saturday 11\u00a0<\/span>Now a certain man was ill, Laz\u2032arus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Laz\u2032arus was ill. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>So the sisters sent to him, saying, \u201cLord, he whom you love is ill.\u201d <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>But when Jesus heard it he said, \u201cThis illness is not unto death; it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by means of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 5\u00a0<\/sup>Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Laz\u2032arus. <\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>So when he heard that he was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>Then after this he said to the disciples, \u201cLet us go into Judea again.\u201d <\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>The disciples said to him, \u201cRabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?\u201d <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cAre there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>But if any one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.\u201d <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>Thus he spoke, and then he said to them, \u201cOur friend Laz\u2032arus has fallen asleep, but I go to awake him out of sleep.\u201d <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>The disciples said to him, \u201cLord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.\u201d <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus told them plainly, \u201cLaz\u2032arus is dead; <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.\u201d <\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, \u201cLet us also go, that we may die with him.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 17\u00a0<\/sup>Now when Jesus came, he found that Laz\u2032arus[a<\/a>]<\/sup> had already been in the tomb four days. <\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[b<\/a>]<\/sup> off, <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary sat in the house. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>Martha said to Jesus, \u201cLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. <\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.\u201d <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to her, \u201cYour brother will rise again.\u201d <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>Martha said to him, \u201cI know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.\u201d <\/span> 25\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to her, \u201cI am the resurrection and the life;[c<\/a>]<\/sup> he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?\u201d <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>She said to him, \u201cYes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world.\u201d …..\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 38\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb; it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. <\/span> 39\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said, \u201cTake away the stone.\u201d Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, \u201cLord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.\u201d <\/span> 40\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to her, \u201cDid I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?\u201d <\/span> 41\u00a0<\/sup>So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, \u201cFather, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. <\/span> 42\u00a0<\/sup>I knew that thou hearest me always, but I have said this on account of the people standing by, that they may believe that thou didst send me.\u201d <\/span> 43\u00a0<\/sup>When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, \u201cLaz\u2032arus, come out.\u201d <\/span> 44\u00a0<\/sup>The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, \u201cUnbind him, and let him go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O my God I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.
