13\u00a0<\/sup>Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was [e<\/a>]<\/sup>seven miles from Jerusalem. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>And they talked together of all these things which had happened. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. <\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.<\/span><\/p>\n 17\u00a0<\/sup>And He said to them, \u201cWhat kind of conversation is<\/i> this that you have with one another as you<\/span> [f<\/a>]<\/sup>walk and are sad?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n 18\u00a0<\/sup>Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, \u201cAre You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 19\u00a0<\/sup>And He said to them, \u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O Lord, our God, in Thy goodness and love for men forgive me all the sins I have committed today in word, deed or thought. Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep. Send Thy Guardian Angel to guard and protect me from all evil. For Thou art the guardian of our souls and bodies, and to Thee we ascribe glory, to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Monday In the course of their conversation with Jesus, the disciples\u2019 mood changes from sadness to joy; they begin to hope again, and feel the need to share their joy with others, thus becoming heralds and witnesses of the risen Christ.<\/p>\n This is an episode exclusive to St Luke, who describes it in a masterly way. It shows our Lord\u2019s zeal for souls. \u201cAs he is walking along, Christ meets two men who have nearly lost all hope. They are beginning to feel that life has no meaning for them. Christ understands their sorrow; he sees into their heart and communicates to them some of the life he carries within himself.<\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 O come, let us worship God our King. Tuesday And He said to them, \u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n So they said to Him, \u201cThe things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. <\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>And certain of those who were<\/i> with us went to the tomb and found it<\/i> just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 25\u00a0<\/sup>Then He said to them, \u201cO foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!<\/span> <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His<\/span> glory?\u201d<\/span> <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He [g<\/a>]<\/sup>expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 Soul of Christ, sanctify me, Body of Christ, save me Blood of Christ, inebriate me, Water from Christ’s side, wash me, Passion of Christ, strengthen me, O good Jesus, hear me, Within Thy wounds hide me, Suffer me not to be separated from Thee, From the malicious enemy defend me, In the hour of my death call me, And bid me come unto Thee, That I may praise Thee with Thy saints, and with Thy angels, Forever and ever, Amen.<\/p>\n Wednesday 30\u00a0<\/sup>Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it,<\/i> and gave it to them. <\/span> 31\u00a0<\/sup>Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.<\/span><\/p>\n 32\u00a0<\/sup>And they said to one another, \u201cDid not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?\u201d <\/span> 33\u00a0<\/sup>So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were<\/i> with them gathered together, <\/span> 34\u00a0<\/sup>saying, \u201cThe Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!\u201d <\/span> 35\u00a0<\/sup>And they told about the things that had happened<\/i> on the road, and how He was [i<\/a>]<\/sup>known to them in the breaking of bread.<\/span><\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0Christ is Risen from the dead trampling down death by death and on those in the tombs bestowing life.\u00a0 \u00a0(Last time Paschaltide ends today) \u201cWhen they draw near the village, he makes as if to go on, but the two disciples stop him and practically force him to stay with them. They recognize hint later when he breaks the bread. The Lord, they exclaimed, has been with us! \u2018And they said to each other: \u201cDid not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?\u201d\u2019 (Lk 24:32). Every Christian should make Christ present among men. He ought to act in such a way that those who know him sense \u2018the aroma of Christ\u2019 (cf. 2 Cor 2:15). Men should be able to recognize the Master in his disciples\u201d (J. Escriv\u00e1, Christ is passing by, 105).<\/p>\n 13-27 Jesus\u2019 conversation with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus gives us a very good idea of the disillusionment felt by his disciples after his apparent total failure. Cleopas\u2019 words summarize Christ\u2019s life and mission (v.19), his Passion and Death (v.20), the despair felt by his disciples (v.2 1), and the events of the Sunday morning (v.22).<\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit,\u00a0 grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.<\/p>\n Friday \u201cJesus joins them as they go along their way. Lord, how great you are, in everything! But you move me even more when you come down to our level, to follow us and to seek us in the hustle and bustle of each day. Lord, grant us a childlike spirit, pure eyes and a clear mind so that we may recognise you when you come without any outward sign of your glory.<\/p>\n \u201cThe journey ends when they reach the village. The two disciples who, without realizing it, have been deeply stirred by the words and love shown by God made man, are sorry to see him leaving. For Jesus \u2018appeared to be going further\u2019 (Lk 24:28). This Lord of ours never forces himself on us. He wants us to turn to him freely, when we begin to grasp the purity of his Love which he has placed in our-souls. We have to hold him back (\u2018they constrained him\u2019) and beg him: \u2018Stay with us, for it is towards evening, and the day is now far spent\u2019 (Lk 24:29).<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s just like us. Always short on daring, perhaps because we are insincere, or because we feel embarrassed. Deep down, what we are really thinking is: \u2018Stay with us, because our souls are shrouded in darkness and You alone are the light. You alone can satisfy this longing that consumes us.\u2019 For \u2018we know full well which among all things fair and honourable is the best \u2014 to possess God for ever\u2019 (St Gregory Nazianzen<\/p>\n Prayer:\u00a0 With the Saints, give rest, O Christ, to the souls of Thy servants, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no sighing, but life everlasting. <\/p>\n Saturday \u201cAnd Jesus stays. Our eyes are opened, as were those of Cleopas and his companion, when Christ breaks the bread; and, though he vanishes once more from sight, we too will find strength to start out once more \u2014 though night is falling \u2014- to tell the others about him, because so much joy cannot be kept in one heart alone.<\/p>\n \u201cThe road to Emmaus: our God has filled this name with sweetness. Now the entire world has become an Emmaus, for the Lord has opened up all the divine paths of the earth\u201d (J. Escriv\u00e1, Friends of God, 3130.<\/p>\n
