Psalm 23<\/p>\n

\n

The Lord<\/span> is<\/i> my shepherd;<\/span><\/span>
\nI shall not want.<\/span>
\n2\u00a0<\/sup>He makes me to lie down in green pastures;<\/span>
\nHe leads me beside the still waters.<\/span>
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>He restores my soul;<\/span>
\nHe leads me in the paths of righteousness<\/span>
\nFor His name\u2019s sake.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,<\/span>
\nI will fear no evil;<\/span>
\nFor You are<\/i> with me;<\/span>
\nYour rod and Your staff, they comfort me.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

5\u00a0<\/sup>You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;<\/span>
\nYou anoint my head with oil;<\/span>
\nMy cup runs over.<\/span>
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me<\/span>
\nAll the days of my life;<\/span>
\nAnd I will dwell[a<\/a>]<\/sup> in the house of the Lord<\/span><\/span>
\nForever.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a popular psalm in the West but strangely is not used in any Orthodox service or liturgical reading aside from the Psalter.<\/p>\n

Through the whole psalm it is the most faithful Christian, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, who speaks; he has laid aside the old age of the first man. He gives thanks that through the Lord\u2019s generosity he has been led from the desert of sin to the region of pasture and the water of rebirth. We must also observe that just as previously he accepted the Ten Commandments of the Law, so here he rejoices that he has been enriched by ten kindnesses. They are not reported in separate verses but recounted in brief phrases.
