{"id":1521,"date":"2015-12-12T20:37:04","date_gmt":"2015-12-13T01:37:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=1521"},"modified":"2015-12-12T17:42:12","modified_gmt":"2015-12-12T22:42:12","slug":"devotion-for-sunday-december-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=1521","title":{"rendered":"Devotion for Sunday, December 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Psalm 23<\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"chapter-2\"><span class=\"text Ps-23-1\">The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> <i>is<\/i> my shepherd;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-1\">I shall not want.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-NKJV-14238\" class=\"text Ps-23-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>He makes me to lie down in green pastures;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-2\">He leads me beside the still waters.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-NKJV-14239\" class=\"text Ps-23-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>He restores my soul;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-3\">He leads me in the paths of righteousness<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-3\">For His name\u2019s sake.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14240\" class=\"text Ps-23-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-4\">I will fear no evil;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-4\">For You <i>are<\/i> with me;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-4\">Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14241\" class=\"text Ps-23-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-5\">You anoint my head with oil;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-5\">My cup runs over.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-NKJV-14242\" class=\"text Ps-23-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-6\">All the days of my life;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-6\">And I will dwell<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-14242a\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-14242a&quot; title=&quot;See footnote a&quot;&gt;a&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+23&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-14242a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup> in the house of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-23-6\">Forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\">This is a popular psalm in the West but strangely is not used in any Orthodox service or liturgical reading aside from the Psalter.<\/p>\n<p>Through the whole psalm it is the most faithful Christian, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, who speaks; he has laid aside the old age of the first man. He gives thanks that through the Lord\u2019s generosity he has been led from the desert of sin to the region of pasture and the water of rebirth. We must also observe that just as previously he accepted the Ten Commandments of the Law, so here he rejoices that he has been enriched by ten kindnesses.
