ST. JAMES THE BROTHER OF THE LORD: “(14-24) What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, \u201cDepart in peace, be warmed and filled,\u201d but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, \u201cYou have faith, and I have works.\u201d Show me your faith without your[d] works, and I will show you my faith by my[e] works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe\u2014and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, \u201cAbraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.\u201d And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.”<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Monday \u00a0 Genesis 39<\/p>\n

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord<\/span> was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>And his master saw that the Lord<\/span> was<\/i> with him and that the Lord<\/span> made all he did to prosper in his hand. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that<\/i> he had he put under his authority. <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>So it was, from the time that<\/i> he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord<\/span> blessed the Egyptian\u2019s house for Joseph\u2019s sake; and the blessing of the Lord<\/span> was on all that he had in the house and in the field. <\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>Thus he left all that he had in Joseph\u2019s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

7\u00a0<\/sup>And it came to pass after these things that his master\u2019s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, \u201cLie with me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>But he refused and said to his master\u2019s wife, \u201cLook, my master does not know what is<\/i> with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>There is<\/i> no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are<\/i> his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

10\u00a0<\/sup>So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or<\/i> to be with her.<\/span><\/p>\n

11\u00a0<\/sup>But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was<\/i> inside, <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>that she caught him by his garment, saying, \u201cLie with me.\u201d But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, \u201cSee, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>So she kept his garment with her until his master came home. <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, \u201cThe Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me; <\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

19\u00a0<\/sup>So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, \u201cYour servant did to me after this manner,\u201d that his anger was aroused. <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>Then Joseph\u2019s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king\u2019s prisoners were<\/i> confined. And he was there in the prison. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>But the Lord<\/span> was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. <\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph\u2019s hand all the prisoners who were<\/i> in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was<\/i> under Joseph\u2019s<\/i> authority,[a<\/a>]<\/sup> because the Lord<\/span> was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord<\/span> made it<\/i> prosper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tuesday \u00a0 Genesis 40<\/p>\n

It came to pass after these things that<\/i> the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was<\/i> confined. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

5\u00a0<\/sup>Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were<\/i> confined in the prison, had a dream, both of them, each man\u2019s dream in one night and<\/i> each man\u2019s dream with its own<\/i> interpretation. <\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were<\/i> sad. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>So he asked Pharaoh\u2019s officers who were<\/i> with him in the custody of his lord\u2019s house, saying, \u201cWhy do you look so<\/i> sad today?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>And they said to him, \u201cWe each have had a dream, and there is<\/i> no interpreter of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So Joseph said to them, \u201cDo not interpretations belong to God? Tell them<\/i> to me, please.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

9\u00a0<\/sup>Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, \u201cBehold, in my dream a vine was<\/i> before me, <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>and in the vine were<\/i> three branches; it was<\/i> as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pharaoh\u2019s cup was<\/i> in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh\u2019s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh\u2019s hand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

12\u00a0<\/sup>And Joseph said to him, \u201cThis is<\/i> the interpretation of it: The three branches are<\/i> three days. <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>Now within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your place, and you will put Pharaoh\u2019s cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon.\u201d ….\u00a0<\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wednesday \u00a0Genesis 41 \u00a0(the butler remembers Joseph when Pharoah has a dream)<\/p>\n

14\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>And Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201cI have had a dream, and there is<\/i> no one who can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that<\/i> you can understand a dream, to interpret it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, \u201cIt is<\/i> not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

17\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: \u201cBehold, in my dream I stood on the bank of the river. <\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>Suddenly seven cows came up out of the river, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such ugliness as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt. <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>And the gaunt and ugly cows ate up the first seven, the fat cows. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>When they had eaten them up, no one would have known that they had eaten them, for they were<\/i> just as ugly as at the beginning. So I awoke. <\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>Also I saw in my dream, and suddenly seven heads came up on one stalk, full and good. <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, and<\/i> blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them. <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>And the thin heads devoured the seven good heads. So I told this<\/i> to the magicians, but there was<\/i> no one who could explain it<\/i> to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

25\u00a0<\/sup>Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, \u201cThe dreams of Pharaoh are<\/i> one; God has shown Pharaoh what He is<\/i> about to do: <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>The seven good cows are<\/i> seven years, and the seven good heads are<\/i> seven years; the dreams are<\/i> one. <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after them are<\/i> seven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind are seven years of famine. <\/span> 28\u00a0<\/sup>This is<\/i> the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is<\/i> about to do. <\/span> 29\u00a0<\/sup>Indeed seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt; <\/span> 30\u00a0<\/sup>but after them seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine will deplete the land. <\/span> 31\u00a0<\/sup>So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be<\/i> very severe. <\/span> 32\u00a0<\/sup>And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is<\/i> established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thursday \u00a0 Genesis 41<\/p>\n

39\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201cInasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is<\/i> no one as discerning and wise as you. <\/span> 40\u00a0<\/sup>You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.\u201d <\/span> 41\u00a0<\/sup>And Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201cSee, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

42\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph\u2019s hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. <\/span> 43\u00a0<\/sup>And he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, \u201cBow the knee!\u201d So he set him over all the land of Egypt. <\/span> 44\u00a0<\/sup>Pharaoh also said to Joseph, \u201cI am<\/i> Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.\u201d <\/span> 45\u00a0<\/sup>And Pharaoh called Joseph\u2019s name Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all<\/i> the land of Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n

46\u00a0<\/sup>Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. <\/span> 47\u00a0<\/sup>Now in the seven plentiful years the ground brought forth abundantly. <\/span> 48\u00a0<\/sup>So he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; ….\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

53\u00a0<\/sup>Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended, <\/span> 54\u00a0<\/sup>and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. <\/span> 55\u00a0<\/sup>So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, \u201cGo to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do.\u201d <\/span> 56\u00a0<\/sup>The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses[c<\/a>]<\/sup> and sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. <\/span> 57\u00a0<\/sup>So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain,<\/i> because the famine was severe in all lands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Friday \u00a0Genesis 42<\/p>\n

3\u00a0<\/sup>So Joseph\u2019s ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>But Jacob did not send Joseph\u2019s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, \u201cLest some calamity befall him.\u201d <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>And the sons of Israel went to buy grain<\/i> among those who journeyed, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.<\/span><\/p>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup>Now Joseph was<\/i> governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph\u2019s brothers came and bowed down before him with their<\/i> faces to the earth. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted as a stranger to them and spoke roughly to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saturday \u00a0Genesis 42<\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/sup>Then Joseph said to them the third day, \u201cDo this and live, for<\/i> I fear God: <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>If you are<\/i> honest men,<\/i> let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you, go and carry grain for the famine of your houses. <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>And bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And they did so. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>Then they said to one another, \u201cWe are<\/i> truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore this distress has come upon us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>And Reuben answered them, saying, \u201cDid I not speak to you, saying, \u2018Do not sin against the boy\u2019; and you would not listen? Therefore behold, his blood is now required of us.\u201d <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>But they did not know that Joseph understood them,<\/i> for he spoke to them through an interpreter. <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>And he turned himself away from them and wept. Then he returned to them again, and talked with them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

25\u00a0<\/sup>Then Joseph gave a command to fill their sacks with grain, to restore every man\u2019s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. Thus he did for them. <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>So they loaded their donkeys with the grain and departed from there. <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>But as one of them<\/i> opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the encampment, he saw his money; and there it was, in the mouth of his sack. <\/span> 28\u00a0<\/sup>So he said to his brothers, \u201cMy money has been restored, and there it is, in my sack!\u201d Then their hearts failed them<\/i> and they were afraid, saying to one another, \u201cWhat is<\/i> this that<\/i> God has done to us?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
