ST. CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA: \u00a0What does the rich man do, surrounded by a great supply of many blessings beyond all numbering? In distress and anxiety, he speaks the words of poverty. He says, \u201cWhat should I do?\u201d \u2026 He does not look to the future. He does not raise his eyes to God. He does not count it worth his while to gain for the mind those treasures that are above in heaven. He does not cherish love for the poor or desire the esteem it gains. He does not sympathize with suffering. It gives him no pain nor awakens his pity. Still more irrational, he settles for himself the length of his life, as if he would also reap this from the ground. He says, \u201cI will say to myself, \u2018Self, you have goods laid up for many years. Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.\u2019 \u201d \u00a0\u201cO rich man,\u201d one may say, \u2018You have storehouses for your fruits, but where will you receive your many years? By the decree of God, your life is shortened.\u2019 \u201d \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cGod,\u201d it tells us, \u201csaid to him, \u2018You fool, this night they will require of you your soul. Whose will these things be that you have prepared?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Then the Lord<\/span> said to Moses, \u201cGo in to Pharaoh and tell him, \u2018Thus says the Lord<\/span> God of the Hebrews: \u201cLet My people go, that they may serve Me. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>For if you refuse to let them<\/i> go, and still hold them, <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>behold, the hand of the Lord<\/span> will be on your cattle in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the oxen, and on the sheep\u2014a very severe pestilence. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>And the Lord<\/span> will make a difference between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. So nothing shall die of all that<\/i> belongs to the children of Israel.\u201d\u2019\u201d <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Lord<\/span> appointed a set time, saying, \u201cTomorrow the Lord<\/span> will do this thing in the land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 6\u00a0<\/sup>So the Lord<\/span> did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the children of Israel, not one died. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pharaoh sent, and indeed, not even one of the livestock of the Israelites was dead. But the heart of Pharaoh became hard, and he did not let the people go.<\/span><\/p>\n Tuesday<\/p>\n Exodus 9<\/p>\n 8\u00a0<\/sup>So the Lord<\/span> said to Moses and Aaron, \u201cTake for yourselves handfuls of ashes from a furnace, and let Moses scatter it toward the heavens in the sight of Pharaoh. <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>And it will become fine dust in all the land of Egypt, and it will cause boils that break out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.\u201d <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>Then they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered them<\/i> toward heaven. And they<\/i> caused boils that break out in sores on man and beast. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>But the Lord<\/span> hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he did not heed them, just as the Lord<\/span> had spoken to Moses.<\/span><\/p>\n Wednesday<\/p>\n Exodus 9<\/p>\n 18\u00a0<\/sup>Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause very heavy hail to rain down, such as has not been in Egypt since its founding until now. <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore send now and<\/i> gather your livestock and all that you have in the field, for the hail shall come down on every man and every animal which is found in the field and is not brought home; and they shall die.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 20\u00a0<\/sup>He who feared the word of the Lord<\/span> among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his livestock flee to the houses. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>But he who did not regard the word of the Lord<\/span> left his servants and his livestock in the field.<\/span><\/p>\n 22\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Lord<\/span> said to Moses, \u201cStretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt\u2014on man, on beast, and on every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.\u201d <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>And Moses stretched out his rod toward heaven; and the Lord<\/span> sent thunder and hail, and fire darted to the ground. And the Lord<\/span> rained hail on the land of Egypt. <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. <\/span> 25\u00a0<\/sup>And the hail struck throughout the whole land of Egypt, all that was<\/i> in the field, both man and beast; and the hail struck every herb of the field and broke every tree of the field. <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were,<\/i> there was no hail.<\/span><\/p>\n 27\u00a0<\/sup>And Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, \u201cI have sinned this time. The Lord<\/span> is<\/i> righteous, and my people and I are<\/i> wicked. <\/span> 28\u00a0<\/sup>Entreat the Lord<\/span>, that there may be no more<\/i> mighty thundering and hail, for it is<\/i> enough. I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 29\u00a0<\/sup>So Moses said to him, \u201cAs soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to the Lord<\/span>; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, that you may know that the earth is<\/i> the Lord<\/span>\u2019s. <\/span> 30\u00a0<\/sup>But as for you and your servants, I know that you will not yet fear the Lord<\/span> God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 31\u00a0<\/sup>Now the flax and the barley were struck, for the barley was<\/i> in the head and the flax was<\/i> in bud. <\/span> 32\u00a0<\/sup>But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they are<\/i> late crops.<\/span><\/p>\n 33\u00a0<\/sup>So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and spread out his hands to the Lord<\/span>; then the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain was not poured on the earth. <\/span> 34\u00a0<\/sup>And when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet more; and he hardened his heart, he and his servants. <\/span> 35\u00a0<\/sup>So the heart of Pharaoh was hard; neither would he let the children of Israel go, as the Lord<\/span> had spoken by Moses.<\/span><\/p>\n Thursday<\/p>\n
