VENERABLE BEDE: He fell upon his face, because he blushes with shame when he remembers the evils he had committed. And he is commanded to rise and walk, because he who, knowing his own weakness, lies lowly on the ground, is led to advance by the consolation of the divine word to mighty deeds. But if faith made him whole, who hurried himself back to give thanks, therefore does unbelief destroy those who have neglected to give glory to God for mercies received. Wherefore that we ought to increase our faith by humility, as it is declared in the former parable, so in this is it exemplified in the actions themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>And the children of Israel said to them, \u201cOh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord<\/span> in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and<\/i> when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Lord<\/span> said to Moses, \u201cBehold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tuesday
\nExodus 16<\/p>\n

17\u00a0<\/sup>Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. <\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>So when they measured it<\/i> by omers, he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one\u2019s need. <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>And Moses said, \u201cLet no one leave any of it till morning.\u201d <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.<\/span><\/p>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>And so it was, on the sixth day, that<\/i> they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>Then he said to them, \u201cThis is what<\/i> the Lord<\/span> has said: \u2018Tomorrow is<\/i> a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord<\/span>. Bake what you will bake today,<\/i> and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.\u2019\u201d <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it. <\/span> 25\u00a0<\/sup>Then Moses said, \u201cEat that today, for today is<\/i> a Sabbath to the Lord<\/span>; today you will not find it in the field. <\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.\u201d …\u00a031\u00a0<\/sup>And the house of Israel called its name Manna.[a<\/a>]<\/sup> And it was<\/i> like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was<\/i> like wafers made<\/i> with honey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wednesday
\nExodus 17<\/p>\n

3\u00a0<\/sup>And the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and said, \u201cWhy is<\/i> it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>So Moses cried out to the Lord<\/span>, saying, \u201cWhat shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

5\u00a0<\/sup>And the Lord<\/span> said to Moses, \u201cGo on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. <\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>So he called the name of the place Massah[a<\/a>]<\/sup> and Meribah,[b<\/a>]<\/sup> because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord<\/span>, saying, \u201cIs the Lord<\/span> among us or not?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thursday<\/p>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>And Moses said to Joshua, \u201cChoose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.\u201d <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>But Moses\u2019 hands became<\/i> heavy; so they took a stone and put it<\/i> under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.<\/span><\/p>\n

**Commentators have noticed that Mose’s arms outstretched made him into \u00a0a ‘cross’. \u00a0So the later victory of Christ was foreshadowed in this.<\/p>\n

Friday
\nAT MT SINAI<\/p>\n

14\u00a0<\/sup>So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>And he said to the people, \u201cBe ready for the third day; do not come near your<\/i> wives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were<\/i> in the camp trembled. <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. <\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>Now Mount Sinai was<\/i> completely in smoke, because the Lord<\/span> descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain[a<\/a>]<\/sup> quaked greatly. <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice. <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Lord<\/span> came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the Lord<\/span> called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saturday
\nExodus 20<\/p>\n

2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cI am<\/i> the Lord<\/span> your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.<\/span><\/p>\n

3\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYou shall have no other gods before Me.<\/span><\/p>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYou shall not make for yourself a carved image\u2014any likeness of anything<\/i> that is<\/i> in heaven above, or that is<\/i> in the earth beneath, or that is<\/i> in the water under the earth; <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord<\/span> your God, am<\/i> a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations<\/i> of those who hate Me, <\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.<\/span><\/p>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cRemember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>Six days you shall labor and do all your work, <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>but the seventh day is<\/i> the Sabbath of the Lord<\/span> your God. In it<\/i> you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is<\/i> within your gates. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>For in<\/i> six days the Lord<\/span> made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is<\/i> in them, and rested the seventh day.
