{"id":271,"date":"2015-05-26T20:27:41","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T00:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=271"},"modified":"2015-05-23T21:28:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-24T01:28:00","slug":"wednesday-may-27","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=271","title":{"rendered":"Wednesday, May 27"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #165916;\"><strong>Orthodox Daily Devotional<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Scripture Reading<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>JOHN 8: <sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, \u201cIf you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. <sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.\u201d <sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>They answered Him, \u201cWe are Abraham\u2019s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How <em>can<\/em> You say, \u2018You will be made free\u2019?\u201d<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered them, \u201cMost assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. <sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>And a slave does not abide in the house forever, <em>but<\/em> a son abides forever. <sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cI know that you are Abraham\u2019s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. <sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.\u201d <sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>They answered and said to Him, \u201cAbraham is our father.\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cIf you were Abraham\u2019s children, you would do the works of Abraham. <sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. <sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>You do the deeds of your father.\u201d Then they said to Him, \u201cWe were not born of fornication; we have one Father\u2014God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Orthodox\u00a0Wisdom<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This saying of Jesus persuades those who believe to leave behind worship that is according to the law. It teaches us that the shadow [i.e., the law] is our guide to the knowledge of him and that, leaving the types and figures behind, we should go resolutely forward to the truth itself, which is Christ the giver of true freedom, who is also our Redeemer.\u2026<br \/>\nAnd so, true salvation is not in the ordinances of the law, nor will anyone win the thrice-longed for freedom from sin by observing the law. Rather, bounding a little above the types and surveying the beauty of worship in the Spirit and acknowledging the truth, that is, Christ, we are justified through faith in him.
