{"id":3496,"date":"2017-06-10T10:57:36","date_gmt":"2017-06-10T14:57:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=3496"},"modified":"2017-06-09T21:03:19","modified_gmt":"2017-06-10T01:03:19","slug":"daily-devotion-for-june-11-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=3496","title":{"rendered":"Daily Devotion for June 11-17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday<\/p>\n<p>Assorted verses including Matthew 19 :27-30<\/p>\n<p>To carry his cross, a true disciple must be ready, if necessary, to sacrifice even family relationships.<\/p>\n<p>According to John Chrysostom this refers to keeping faith under persecution even if it means to lose one\u2019s family. It also means to accept that unbelieving family members may cut off ties because of the believer\u2019s faith. Believers are promised a hundredfold of houses and relatives not in an earthly sense, but in a spiritual sense\u2014 the fathers and mothers of the Church, our brothers and sisters in Christ, and houses of worship and fellowship.<\/p>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8num6-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8num6-0-0\">Quote: \u00a0 Elder Paisios on our sin and the purpose of life&#8230;<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8num6-0-0\">&#8220;&#8230;if God overlooked all these things and accepted us into Paradise as we are, we would create problems there, as well. For this reason, temptations are allowed in this life so as to clean us up, purify our soul with sorrow and weeping, and oblige us to take refuge in God in order to find our salvation.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>Monday<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-14-8\">Acts 14:8 And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother\u2019s womb, who had never walked. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27424\" class=\"text Acts-14-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup><i>This<\/i> man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27425\" class=\"text Acts-14-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>said with a loud voice, \u201cStand up straight on your feet!\u201d And he leaped and walked. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27426\" class=\"text Acts-14-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian <i>language,<\/i> \u201cThe gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27427\" class=\"text Acts-14-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>And Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27428\" class=\"text Acts-14-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27429\" class=\"text Acts-14-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27430\" class=\"text Acts-14-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>and saying, \u201cMen, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27431\" class=\"text Acts-14-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27432\" class=\"text Acts-14-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27433\" class=\"text Acts-14-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-14-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul <i>and<\/i> dragged <i>him<\/i> out of the city, supposing him to be dead. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27435\" class=\"text Acts-14-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday<\/p>\n<p>Acts 15:4<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27447\" class=\"text Acts-15-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27448\" class=\"text Acts-15-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, \u201cIt is necessary to circumcise them, and to command <i>them<\/i> to keep the law of Moses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-15-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27450\" class=\"text Acts-15-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up <i>and<\/i> said to them: \u201cMen <i>and<\/i> brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27451\" class=\"text Acts-15-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as <i>He did<\/i> to us, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27452\" class=\"text Acts-15-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27453\" class=\"text Acts-15-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27454\" class=\"text Acts-15-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-27454a\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-27454a&quot; title=&quot;See footnote a&quot;&gt;a&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+15&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-27454a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup> we shall be saved in the same manner as they.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27455\" class=\"text Acts-15-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27456\" class=\"text Acts-15-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, \u201cMen <i>and<\/i> brethren, listen to me: <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27457\" class=\"text Acts-15-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27458\" class=\"text Acts-15-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-27459\" class=\"text Acts-15-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"oblique\">\u2018After this I will return<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Acts-15-16\"><span class=\"oblique\">And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Acts-15-16\"><span class=\"oblique\">I will rebuild its ruins,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Acts-15-16\"><span class=\"oblique\">And I will set it up;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-NKJV-27460\" class=\"text Acts-15-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"oblique\">So that the rest of mankind may seek the L<\/span><span class=\"small-caps\">ord<\/span><span class=\"oblique\">,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Acts-15-17\"><span class=\"oblique\">Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Acts-15-17\"><span class=\"oblique\">Says the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> who does all these things.\u2019<\/span><sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-27460b\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-27460b&quot; title=&quot;See footnote b&quot;&gt;b&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+15&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-27460b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"top-1\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-27461\" class=\"text Acts-15-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cKnown to God from eternity are all His works.<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-27461c\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-27461c&quot; title=&quot;See footnote c&quot;&gt;c&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+15&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-27461c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27462\" class=\"text Acts-15-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27463\" class=\"text Acts-15-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, <i>from<\/i> sexual immorality,<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-27463d\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-27463d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;&gt;d&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+15&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-27463d\">d<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>from<\/i> things strangled, and <i>from<\/i> blood. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27464\" class=\"text Acts-15-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"top-1\">Wednesday<\/p>\n<p class=\"top-1\">Acts 16:\u00a0<span id=\"en-NKJV-27493\" class=\"text Acts-16-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, \u201cCome over to Macedonia and help us.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27494\" class=\"text Acts-16-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-16-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27501\" class=\"text Acts-16-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, \u201cThese men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27502\" class=\"text Acts-16-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And this she did for many days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-16-18\">But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, \u201cI command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.\u201d And he came out that very hour. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27503\" class=\"text Acts-16-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged <i>them<\/i> into the marketplace to the authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27504\" class=\"text Acts-16-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, \u201cThese men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27505\" class=\"text Acts-16-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27506\" class=\"text Acts-16-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded <i>them<\/i> to be beaten with rods. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27507\" class=\"text Acts-16-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw <i>them<\/i> into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27508\" class=\"text Acts-16-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-16-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27510\" class=\"text Acts-16-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone\u2019s chains were loosed. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27511\" class=\"text Acts-16-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27512\" class=\"text Acts-16-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, \u201cDo yourself no harm, for we are all here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thursday<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27513\" class=\"text Acts-16-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27514\" class=\"text Acts-16-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>And he brought them out and said, \u201cSirs, what must I do to be saved?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27515\" class=\"text Acts-16-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>So they said, \u201cBelieve on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27516\" class=\"text Acts-16-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27517\" class=\"text Acts-16-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>And he took them the same hour of the night and washed <i>their<\/i> stripes. And immediately he and all his <i>family<\/i> were baptized. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27518\" class=\"text Acts-16-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-16-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, \u201cLet those men go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27520\" class=\"text Acts-16-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, \u201cThe magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27521\" class=\"text Acts-16-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>But Paul said to them, \u201cThey have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, <i>and<\/i> have thrown <i>us<\/i> into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-27522\" class=\"text Acts-16-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27523\" class=\"text Acts-16-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>Then they came and pleaded with them and brought <i>them<\/i> out, and asked <i>them<\/i> to depart from the city. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27524\" class=\"text Acts-16-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>So they went out of the prison and entered <i>the house of<\/i> Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Friday<\/p>\n<p>Acts 17<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-2\"><span class=\"text Acts-17-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">\u00a0<\/span>Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27526\" class=\"text Acts-17-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27527\" class=\"text Acts-17-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and <i>saying,<\/i> \u201cThis Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27528\" class=\"text Acts-17-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-17-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious,<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-27529a\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-27529a&quot; title=&quot;See footnote a&quot;&gt;a&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+17&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-27529a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup> took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27530\" class=\"text Acts-17-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, \u201cThese who have turned the world upside down have come here too. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27531\" class=\"text Acts-17-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king\u2014Jesus.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27532\" class=\"text Acts-17-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-27533\" class=\"text Acts-17-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-17-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea.
