OSB Notes: \u00a0Seventy times seven: Symbolic of an unlimited amount. This parable illustrates the need for unlimited forgiveness. Ten thousand talents is an impossible sum, more than a laborer could earn in several lifetimes. A hundred denarii is a significant amount from an earthly perspective (about three months\u2019 wages), yet it is a pittance when compared to the debt owed the king. God not only stays the punishment we deserve, but forgives us the entire debt as well . Because God forgives us, we in turn are required to grant the gift of forgiveness to others. Certain Fathers give a spiritual interpretation to the punishment described here. The man represents the soul, the wife represents the body, and the children represent a person\u2019s deeds. Thus, the body and the deeds are given over to slavery, that is to Satan, so that the soul might possibly be saved (see 1Co 5: 5).<\/p>\n

Tuesday<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 2:\u00a0<\/span>And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony[a<\/a>]<\/sup> of God. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>And my speech and my preaching were<\/i> not with persuasive words of human[b<\/a>]<\/sup> wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup>However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom<\/i> which God ordained before the ages for our glory, <\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.<\/span><\/p>\n

10\u00a0<\/sup>But God has revealed them<\/i> to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.<\/span><\/p>\n

13\u00a0<\/sup>These things we also speak, not in words which man\u2019s wisdom teaches but which the Holy[d<\/a>]<\/sup> Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them,<\/i> because they are spiritually discerned. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly<\/i> judged by no one. <\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>For \u201cwho has known the mind of the L<\/span>ord<\/span> that he may instruct Him?\u201d<\/span>[e<\/a>]<\/sup> But we have the mind of Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chrysostom: \u00a0Paul is saying that when he, a man thought to be foolish and a preacher of folly, gets the better of the wise, he overcomes their wisdom, not by foolishness but by a more perfect wisdom. This wisdom is so broad and so great that the other kind appears to be foolishness. True wisdom is the gospel, the means of salvation through the cross of Christ. The perfect are those who believe. They are indeed \u201cperfect,\u201d because they know that all human things are utterly helpless, and therefore they ignore them, being convinced that they have nothing to gain from them. This is what true believers are like.\u00a0Paul is keen to point out that God always loved us, even from the very beginning, when we did not yet exist. For if he had not loved us, he would not have foreordained our riches. Look beyond the broken relationship which has come in between, and you will see that God\u2019s love for us is more ancient still.<\/p>\n

Wednesday<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 3:\u00a09\u00a0<\/sup>For we are God\u2019s fellow workers; you are God\u2019s field, you are<\/i> God\u2019s building. <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. <\/span> 12\u00a0<\/sup>Now if anyone builds on this foundation with<\/i> gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>each one\u2019s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one\u2019s work, of what sort it is. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>If anyone\u2019s work which he has built on it<\/i> endures, he will receive a reward. <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>If anyone\u2019s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that<\/i> the Spirit of God dwells in you? <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple<\/i> you are.<\/span><\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/sup>Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, \u201cHe catches the wise in their<\/span> own<\/i> craftiness\u201d<\/span>; [a<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>and again, \u201cThe L<\/span>ord<\/span> knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.\u201d<\/span>[b<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore let no one boast in men. Chrysostom:\u00a0If someone has the right faith but leads a wicked life, his faith will not protect him from punishment, because his work will be burned up. A man in gold armor will pass through a river of fire and come out shining all the more brightly, but a man who passes through it with hay will lose it all and destroy himself besides.<\/p>\n

Thursday<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 4:Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court.[a<\/a>]<\/sup> In fact, I do not even judge myself. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one\u2019s praise will come from God.<\/span><\/p>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup>Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>For who makes you differ from another?<\/i> And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it,<\/i> why do you boast as if you had not received it?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>You are already full! You are already rich! You have reigned as kings without us\u2014and indeed I could wish you did reign, that we also might reign with you! <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>We are<\/i> fools for Christ\u2019s sake, but you are<\/i> wise in Christ! Friday<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians:\u00a0It is actually reported that there is<\/i> sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named[a<\/a>]<\/sup> among the Gentiles\u2014that a man has his father\u2019s wife! <\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. <\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. <\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, <\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.[b<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup>Your glorying is<\/i> not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.[c<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread<\/i> of sincerity and truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

9\u00a0<\/sup>I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>Yet I<\/i> certainly did<\/i> not mean<\/i> with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner\u2014not even to eat with such a person.<\/span><\/p>\n

12\u00a0<\/sup>For what have<\/i> I to do<\/i> with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>But those who are outside God judges. Therefore \u201cput away from yourselves the evil person.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Servian: \u00a0When Paul says that this man must be delivered to Satan, he does not mean that he should be handed over to the power of the evil one. Rather, all the evils of this life, for example, diseases, sorrows, sufferings, and other circumstances, were attributed to Satan, and it is in this sense that Paul uses the term here. What he means is that this man should be exposed to the hardships of life<\/p>\n

Saturday<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 6:\u00a0<\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,[a<\/a>]<\/sup> nor sodomites, <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. <\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.<\/span><\/p>\n

12\u00a0<\/sup>All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is<\/i> not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.<\/span><\/p>\n

15\u00a0<\/sup>Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them<\/i> members of a harlot? Certainly not! <\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her?<\/i> For \u201cthe two,\u201d<\/span> He says, \u201cshall become one flesh.\u201d<\/span>[b<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/sup>Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. <\/span> 19\u00a0<\/sup>Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is<\/i> in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? <\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body[c<\/a>]<\/sup> and in your spirit, which are God\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

OECUMENIUS: Other sins like anger and greed come from the soul, but fornication [sex outside of marriage] has its roots in the flesh. Paul makes special mention of it here because it was the problem which he had to deal with at the time. Fornication is not self-evidently the worst sin of all.<\/p>\n
