And they said, Unto John&#8217;s baptism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-KJV-27590\" class=\"text Acts-19-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-KJV-27591\" class=\"text Acts-19-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-KJV-27592\" class=\"text Acts-19-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-KJV-27593\" class=\"text Acts-19-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>And all the men were about twelve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-KJV-27594\" class=\"text Acts-19-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"dk6f-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"2qur4-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"cpif6-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"6jqd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6jqd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6jqd-0-0\">ORTHODOX STUDY BIBLE EPISTLE NOTES&#8230;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"1egm0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"1egm0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1egm0-0-0\">Repentance (v. 4) is good, but apart from Christ Jesus, it does not secure salvation. Repentance is enough to stay people from sin, but it cannot restore us from corruption. Only the Incarnation of the Son of God has the power to overthrow both sin and its subsequent corruption. Thus, a person needs to be joined to Christ in baptism and the sustaining power of the Holy Spirit. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"cf1u2-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"31g3h-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"31g3h-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"31g3h-0-0\">The laying on of hands for the reception of the Holy Spirit (chrismation) is a distinct sacrament from baptism, though always united to it. In the Church today, chrismation can be administered not only by the bishop, but also by presbyters who anoint with a special oil consecrated by the bishop.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"av8jm-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"av8jm-0-0\">Moinday<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"av8jm-0-0\">*We will follow the comments of St. Bede on certain Scriptures<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fqbso\" data-offset-key=\"av8jm-0-0\">\n<p>Matthew 2:<sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Now when they [Wise Men] had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, \u201cArise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.\u201d<span id=\"en-NKJV-23184\" class=\"text Matt-2-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23185\" class=\"text Matt-2-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, <span class=\"oblique\">\u201cOut of Egypt I called My Son.\u201d<\/span><sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-23185b\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-23185b&quot; title=&quot;See footnote b&quot;&gt;b&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew+2&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-23185b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-2-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>BEDE:<\/p>\n<p>The flight into Egypt signifies that the elect are often by the wickedness of the bad driven from their\u00a0homes, or sentenced to banishment. Thus He, who, we shall see below, gave the command to His own, When they shall persecute you in one city, flee ye to another, first practised what He enjoined, as a man flying before the face of man on earth. He whom but a little before a star had proclaimed to the Magi to be worshipped as from heaven.<\/p>\n<p>In this death of the children the precious death of all Christ\u2019s martyrs is figured; that they were infants signifies, that by the merit of humility alone can we come to the glory of martyrdom; that they were slain in Bethlehem and the coasts thereof, that the persecution shall be both in Jerusalem whence the Church originated, and throughout the world; in those of two years old are figured the perfect in doctrine and works; those under that age the neophytes; that they were slain while Christ escaped, signifies that the bodies of the martyrs may be destroyed by the wicked, but that Christ cannot be taken from them. 2:17\u201318<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 3:1<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span class=\"text Matt-3-1\">In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23195\" class=\"text Matt-3-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>and saying, \u201cRepent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23196\" class=\"text Matt-3-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Matt-3-3\"><span class=\"oblique\">\u201cThe voice of one crying in the wilderness:<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Matt-3-3\"><span class=\"oblique\">\u2018Prepare the way of the L<\/span><span class=\"small-caps\">ord<\/span><span class=\"oblique\">;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Matt-3-3\"><span class=\"oblique\">Make His paths straight.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"top-1\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-23197\" class=\"text Matt-3-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Now John himself was clothed in camel\u2019s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23198\" class=\"text Matt-3-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23199\" class=\"text Matt-3-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>BEDE:<\/p>\n<p>In like manner has He cried from the beginning through the voice of all who have spoken aught by inspiration. And yet is John only called, The voice; because that Word which others shewed afar off, he declares as near.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 5:<span class=\"text Matt-5-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">\u201cYou are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23249\" class=\"text Matt-5-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">\u201cYou are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.<\/span> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23250\" class=\"text Matt-5-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all <i>who are<\/i> in the house.<\/span> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23251\" class=\"text Matt-5-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>BEDE:\u00a0\u00a0Christ Himself has lighted this lamp, when He filled the earthen vessel of human nature with the fire of His Divinity, which He would not either hide from them that believe, nor put under a bushel that is shut up under the measure of the Law, or confine within the limits of any one oration. The lampstand is the Church, on which He set the lamp, when He affixed to our foreheads the faith of His incarnation.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 8:1\u00a0<span class=\"text Matt-8-1\">When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23348\" class=\"text Matt-8-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, \u201cLord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23349\" class=\"text Matt-8-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus put out <i>His<\/i> hand and touched him, saying, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cI am willing; be cleansed.\u201d<\/span> Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23350\" class=\"text Matt-8-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus said to him, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cSee that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>BEDE:<\/p>\n<p>Should any be perplexed how, when the Lord seems here to approve Moses\u2019 offering, the Church does not receive it, let him remember, that Christ had not yet offered His body for a holocaust. And it behoved that the typical sacrifices should not be taken away, before that which they typified was established by the testimony of the Apostles\u2019 preaching, and by the faith of the people believing. By this man was figured the whole human race, for he was not only leprous, but, according to the Gospel of Luke, is described as full of leprosy. For all have sinned, and need glory of God; (Rom. 3:23.) to wit, that glory, that the hand of the Saviour being stretched out, (that is, the Word being made flesh,) and touching human nature, they might be cleansed from the vanity of their former ways; and that they that had been long abominable, and cast out from the camp of God\u2019s people, might be restored to the temple and the priest, and be able to offer their bodies a living sacrifice to Him to whom it is said, Thou art a Priest for ever.<\/p>\n<p>Friday<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 8:\u00a0<span class=\"text Matt-8-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Now when Jesus had come into Peter\u2019s house, He saw his wife\u2019s mother lying sick with a fever. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23361\" class=\"text Matt-8-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. And she arose and served them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-8-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23363\" class=\"text Matt-8-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Matt-8-17\">\u201c<span class=\"oblique\">He Himself took our infirmities<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Matt-8-17\"><span class=\"oblique\">And bore our sicknesses.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<span class=\"text Matt-8-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23370\" class=\"text Matt-8-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23371\" class=\"text Matt-8-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>Then His disciples came to <i>Him<\/i> and awoke Him, saying, \u201cLord, save us! We are perishing!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23372\" class=\"text Matt-8-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>But He said to them, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cWhy are you fearful, O you of little faith?\u201d<\/span> Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23373\" class=\"text Matt-8-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>So the men marveled, saying, \u201cWho can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>BEDE:<\/p>\n<p>Figuratively; Peter\u2019s house is the Law, or the circumcision, his mother-in-law the synagogue, which is as it were the mother of the Church committed to Peter. She is in a fever, that is, she is sick of zealous hate, and persecutes the Church. The Lord touches her hand, when He turns her carnal works to spiritual uses.<\/p>\n<p>The boat is the present Church, in which Christ passes over the sea of this world with His own, and stills the waves of persecution. Wherefore we may wonder, and give thanks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Saturday<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 8:<span class=\"text Matt-8-28\">rgesenes,\u00a0there met Him two demon-possessed <i>men,<\/i> coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23375\" class=\"text Matt-8-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>And suddenly they cried out, saying, \u201cWhat have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23376\" class=\"text Matt-8-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23377\" class=\"text Matt-8-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>So the demons begged Him, saying, \u201cIf You cast us out, permit us to go away<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-23377d\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-23377d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;&gt;d&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+8&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-23377d\">d<\/a>]<\/sup> into the herd of swine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23378\" class=\"text Matt-8-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>And He said to them, \u201cGo.\u201d So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23379\" class=\"text Matt-8-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>Then those who kept <i>them<\/i> fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what <i>had happened<\/i> to the demon-possessed <i>men.<\/i> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23380\" class=\"text Matt-8-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged <i>Him<\/i> to depart from their region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The swine are they that delight in filthy manners; for unless one live as a swine, the devils do not receive power over him; or at most, only to try him, not to destroy him. That the swine were sent headlong into the lake, signifies, that when the people of the Gentiles are delivered from the condemnation of the d\u00e6mons, yet still they who would not believe in Christ, perform their profane rites in secret, drowned in a blind and deep curiosity. That they that fed the swine, fled and told what was done, signifies that even the leaders of the wicked though they shun the law of Christianity, yet cease not to proclaim the wonderful power of Christ. When struck with terror, they entreat Him to depart from them, they signify a great number who, well satisfied with their ancient life, shew themselves willing to honour the Christian law, while they declare themselves unable to perform it.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u00a0 \u00a0**EXTRA FOR NEXT WEEK<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 10:\u00a0<span class=\"text Matt-10-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">\u00a0<\/span>And when He had called His twelve disciples to <i>Him,<\/i> He gave them power <i>over<\/i> unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23420\" class=\"text Matt-10-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the <i>son<\/i> of Zebedee, and John his brother; <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23421\" class=\"text Matt-10-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the <i>son<\/i> of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-23421a\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-23421a&quot; title=&quot;See footnote a&quot;&gt;a&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+10&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-23421a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup> Thaddaeus; <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23422\" class=\"text Matt-10-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Simon the Cananite,<sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-23422b\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-23422b&quot; title=&quot;See footnote b&quot;&gt;b&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+10&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-23422b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup> and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-10-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: <span class=\"woj\">\u201cDo not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans.<\/span> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23424\" class=\"text Matt-10-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.<\/span> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23425\" class=\"text Matt-10-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">And as you go, preach, saying, \u2018The kingdom of heaven is at hand.\u2019<\/span> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-23426\" class=\"text Matt-10-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead,<\/span><sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-23426c\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-23426c&quot; title=&quot;See footnote c&quot;&gt;c&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+10&amp;version=NKJV#fen-NKJV-23426c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup><span class=\"woj\"> cast out demons.
