{"id":802,"date":"2015-08-22T20:18:35","date_gmt":"2015-08-23T00:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=802"},"modified":"2015-08-15T20:52:07","modified_gmt":"2015-08-16T00:52:07","slug":"sunday-august-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orthodoxinsight.com\/?p=802","title":{"rendered":"Sunday, August 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">MATTHEW 19 <\/span><span class=\"text\"><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>Now behold, one came and said to Him, \u201cGood Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?\u201d<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>So He said to him, <\/span><span class=\"woj\">\u201cWhy do you call Me good?<\/span> <span class=\"woj\">No one <i>is<\/i> good but One, <i>that is,<\/i> God But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"text\"><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>He said to Him, \u201cWhich ones?\u201d Jesus said, <\/span><span class=\"woj\">\u201c\u2018You shall not murder,\u2019 \u2018You shall not commit adultery,\u2019 \u2018You shall not steal,\u2019 \u2018You shall not bear false witness,\u2019<\/span><span class=\"text\"> <sup>19\u00a0<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"woj\">\u2018Honor your father and <i>your<\/i> mother,<\/span><span class=\"text\"><sup>]<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"woj\"> and, \u2018You shall love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><span class=\"text\"><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>The young man said to Him, \u201cAll these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?\u201d<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to him, <\/span><span class=\"woj\">\u201cIf you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"text\"><sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus said to His disciples, <\/span><span class=\"woj\">\u201cAssuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.<\/span><span class=\"text\"> <sup>24\u00a0<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"woj\">And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"text\"><sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>When His disciples heard <i>it,<\/i> they were greatly astonished, saying, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For He did not say, \u201cgive repeatedly to the poor,\u201d but \u201cgive\u201d once and for all and be stripped of your wealth. But since there are some who give alms but who lead a life full of every kind of filth, He adds, \u201cand come and follow Me,\u201d that is, possess every other virtue as well. The young man, however, was sorrowful, for though he desired eternal life, and the soil of his heart was deep and fertile, yet the thorns of wealth were choking him. For it says, \u201che had great possessions.\u201d He who has few possessions is not similarly restrained by them, for the bond of many possessions is more tyrannical. Because the Lord was conversing with a rich man, He said, \u201cDo you love wealth?
