“Today people can be living in the same apartment building and not know each other. In the past there was the  neighborhood that allowed people to get acquainted and help each other in a time of need. Someone might be travelling with his horse and cart and meet an acquaintance on the road. “Where are you coming from? Where are you going?” They might ask each other. “I’m going there too. Come on, we’ll go together.”  People thought of each other and whenever they could offer some help they did. They were curious, in a good way, and would ask if they could be of help in any situation whatsoever. They even had acquaintances from village to village.”
