We should never forget that there were numerous martyrs for the Faith at the hand of the Ottoman Turks until modern times.  The example of the three martyrs of Spestes teaches us that in the normal course of life martyrdom can come unexpectedly and  we can be faced with a choice between Christ and earthly life:
