St. Nikolai Velimirovich on the Body and Soul’s Relationship
“The Lord knows the value of human bodies. He has said through His prophets, apostles and hymnographers what the body is – vanishing smoke, withering grass, fading flower, dust of dust. People look at the vehicle due to their near-sightedness and vanity. They look at the vehicle and not at the driver. But He looks first at the driver who is hidden in the vehicle. All of His care and love are directed toward the invisible driver in the vehicle, which is to say, toward the soul which is in the body. And if He repairs and cleans the vehicle, that is only for the driver’s sake. If He heals and feeds human bodies, that is for the sake of the immortal human soul. “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Matt. 16: 26). The Lord Jesus often repeats the warning to people not to worry about food, drink and clothing. This is the main concern of the godless, not of His followers. It is not meet for the sons of God to consider as most important those things which are most important to animals. He who has invited us as His guests into this world knows what we need and will take care of.”
